The reading log is really just a notebook where your student will keep track of his or her reading throughout the entire school year.
It may sound simple, and it is. But the reading log is crucial to helping me instruct your child and improve his or her reading level. It contains valuable information about what your child is reading, and how often. It also helps me assess important skills such as reading comprehension, reading speed, and critical thinking.
For these reasons, it is extremely important that the reading log is completed correctly every single time your child reads. My format and requirements for each reading log entry can be found below.
RULES FOR THE READING LOG
Reading log must be a marble composition notebook (no spiral notebooks or binders).
Student must complete a new entry every time he or she reads, whether at home or at school.
Every entry must include the following information: DATE, PLACE (home or school), TITLE OF BOOK, PAGES READ (from ? to ?).
Home reading log entries must also include a summary or retelling of what the student read (1-2 paragraphs), as well as 3 - 4 sentences about the student's thoughts and reactions to the reading.
Some Important Notes About Reading Homework
Students are expected to read at home for 30 to 45 minutes every day.
All reading completed should be recorded in the student's reading log/notebook.
Notebook entries are the only evidence I have that your child is completing his or reading homework satisfactorily. Please make sure that the reading log entry is completed regularly, so I can give your child credit for reading at home.
